Are robots making you expendable?

A recent article in The Independent reports, “Robots are going to steal the jobs of chefs, salespeople and models…” But wait. There’s more.  The article also reveals what researchers say is the full list of likely robot professions.

Do you need to worry?

Salesmen, chefs and even models need to worry. Other professions like therapists, personal trainers and teachers, look to be safe from the robots. The Red Flag is if your job requires repetitive skills, the manipulation of data or manual entering of information, start bringing your resume up to date. Researchers say about 35 per cent of jobs like these are likely to be given to robots during the next 20 years.

If you want to see the entire list, it is given at the end of this report by Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne: The Future of Employment’.

What advantages do humans have over robots?

Jobs that reward theses human traits were more likely to be safe:

  1. Creative endeavors, such as writing.
  2. Entrepreneurship
  3. Scientific discovery.
  4. Social interactions. (No, “Do you want fries with that?” doesn’t count as social interaction.)

If you are a manager or care-giver, chances are your job is safe for now, too. However, scientists have been creating robots designed to be friends to lonely people for years. And are mid-level managers ever really “safe?”

What’s next?

Researchers interviewed point out that robots have already taken on a good number of jobs. Remember when there was someone at the airport counter to check you in and print out your Boarding Pass?  Remember when someone behind the counter took your food order? Remember when you had to pay for your purchases at a cash register, manned by a human, at the grocery or hardware store?

Remember when “Computer” used to refer to people that did data entry? Now it refers to that little robot sitting on everyone’s desk.

Look in the mirror and ask yourself this question: “Am I expendable?”
